TAKING BACK THE AIRWAYS FOR CHRIST

Most Americans spend more time with the television than they do with their spouses or family. 99% of American homes have a television, and it is estimated that the average person watches 3 to 4 hours of television everyday, including our children. Our view of the world, of society, of family and even of life itself comes from the Media. It has become the world’s center for truth, direction, and comfort.  It has become our teacher, our therapist, our friend, our church, our counselor, and even our children’s babysitters.

The average non-Christian person no longer turns to teachers, therapists or the church when they have a problem; they turn on Oprah, or the Supernanny, or one of the countless programs that try to tell us how to satisfy our mate, raise our children, lose weight, look great, get healthy, decorate our house, and live like the celebrities. To de-stress from an overwhelming day, we turn on the television. When we are lonely we turn on the television.  When we want to be entertained, we turn on the television. When we want someone to tell us how things are going in the world, we turn on the television.

Television, we are told, is simply a reflection of the life of our society. We are shown drug addicts, alcoholics, homosexuals, promiscuous people, and now even professional criminals, who are happy with their lifestyle. The entertainment industry tells us the desirable life is one of wealth and fame.  They tell us that if we’re not satisfied with our mates – just go find another one.  They tell us that life is about getting satisfied, without consideration of consequence. They depict a life devoid of God, as glamorous, desirable, and they promote sin as freedom.  They do not tell the truth about sins that lead to death and the devastating effects from those sins and lifestyles.

But just as the Bible teaches us that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God, the opposite is true as well.  What penetrates our minds day in and day out becomes your truth and your reality.  Children learn to imitate what they see on television; they learn that homosexuality is simply another lifestyle choice, that pre-marital sex is not only acceptable but expected, that violence is the norm, and that drugs and drinking are just a normal part of life.  Society becomes numbed to the violence they see day in and day out, and we lose our moral bearings.   The quickest way to disciple a nation is to gain control of it’s media.

As Christians we believe what the Bible says, Bad company corrupts good character, but what we don’t realize is that television is company.  The characters on television and in movies are people.  They are people that we, in a sense hang out with
